Review by Andrea Purnomo
Bike shorts, it’s a fashion thing now. You don't need a bike to wear them. I, however have a bike (or 2) - so finding a comfortable pair of padded bike shorts you can wear out is hard to come by. I was drawn to the pockets on the Moda, but fell in love with everything else.
Testing ground: Nearly every ride
Dhb Moda women’s 12" cycle shorts Main: 80% nylon 20% lycra Pocket: 86% polyester 14% spandex Atlantic Deep (teal colour) UK6 Wiggle.com.au Price: AU$90.00
Right in the pocket
Bought this for the pocket, but my oh my, I got much, much more. The two large mesh pockets on the legs can fit phones or snacks of various sizes. Your phone fits so nice and snug that you can easily forget it's there. I thought I lost my phone countless times.
It's all in the fit
The team at dhb say the Moda collection is created for women, by women, and personally I think it shows. Not only are these shorts stretchy and breathable, but they look so damn good too. The high waisted fit is also comfortable and flattering with any top you pair it with. Elastic Interface® NICE ANATOMIC WOMEN chamois According to dhb these shorts have a seat pad from the Italian chamois professionals Elastic Interface®. Now, it's no biggie seeing as nearly all professional bike shorts are made from synthetic chamois (it's hella absorbant), but that combined with a seat pad shapped anatomically for women has given it a ridiculous level of comfort in the nether-regions. It's said to be developed for up to 3-hours of riding in continuous contact with the saddle, but I've used it on rides longer than 6-hours and still felt like a queen down there. Apparently, the shape of the seat pad has a central channel that relieves pressure down south which would contribute to the comfort. The ECO X-Tract top sheet helps expel moisture, which explains why I'm still comfortable during +30°C rides. The team at dhb say the Moda collection is created for women, by women, and personally I think it shows.
Overall
Wearing these shorts always remind me to give women specific cycling products a chance. I don't buy cycling products because frankly, they don't look good and the colours options for women aren't the best. The fact that these shorts came in the colour teal sealed the deal. Could brands please release other colours? A fashionable bright blue? Navy? Olive? Red? Grey, or orange perhaps? The fit of the shorts are divine. Comfortable, flexible, breathe-able, and the seams are in all the right places making movement seamless. The ergonomically female shaped seat pad on the shorts take off the pressure in the places down south. There is but ONE CON I give these shorts - the 12" is a bit longer than I'd like and it gives you an annoying tan line. It's a trivial issue, but I know I'm not alone in this. I like to dress up (or dress down), and the tan line looks ridiculous when I wear denim short-shorts or a short dress. Probably best to try the shorter version as well. We're giving this a solid:
