Wingello State Forest was a howl of fun over the weekend (Saturday 22nd - Sunday 23rd July) with the NSW Siberian Express Hypro Premium Sled Dog Sprint event. Organised by the NSW Siberian Express club in conjunction with the Australian Federation of Sleddog Sports (AFSS) and sponsored by Hypro Premium and Total Tools, the weekend was a big day for the people and their pooches but all you saw were smiles and slobbers. All were welcomed to compete and attend, with racers and Rovers coming from all across Australia. Points gained at the event goes towards the ASSA's (Australian Sleddog Sports Association) point score system. Despite the frosty 6am start on both days everybody was revved up to go in various race categories: 1 or 2 dog and scooter; 1 or 2 dog and touring scooter; 3,4,6 or 8 dog and rig; bikejor mens & womens; canicross mens & womens; junior; and pee wee. It was touching to see the love everyone had for their dogs, and to witness the bond shared between human and cainine. These events show us that humans and dogs make a solid team. We're a family - a pack. SLED DOG 101A dog and musher must work together to manouver through the forest on dirt trails, communicating when to take left and right turns to make their way safely around the track. The 1 and 2 dog class: mushers use scooters. The 3, 4, 6 and 8 class mushers use 3 wheeled rigs. The bikejoring class involves 1 dog and a mountain bike, and the canicross involves both a dog and human trail running. According to NSW Siberian Express, Sled Dog racing was introduced in Australia around 25 years ago and has become a very popular winter sport the whole family can enjoy while spending quality time with your dogs.
